Description
This late 1940s or early 1950s skirt suit combines a hip-length, tailored jacket and pencil skirt, both in a rich shade of rust wool gabardine. The jacket features large, square shoulder pads and a gently nipped-in waist. The notched lapels have a lovely, curvy shape. 4 covered buttons fasten the jacket in front, and 2 more buttons trim topstitched double flaps on the pockets at each hip. The bracelet-length sleeves are tapered slightly from the shoulders to hem. The jacket is fully lined in matching rust rayon satin, which has been carefully repaired at each inner shoulder seam. The skirt has a narrow, decorative pleat running down the front side. Currently knee-length on my mannequin, it has been inexpertly shortened, and almost certainly could be let back down by a competent seamstress so as to look less lumpy at the hem. The skirt is unlined and fastens with a metal zipper at the side seam, and a single button at the waistband. The zipper has an old repair at the top on one side, where it has been hand-stitched in, rather than machine-stitched (see close-up photo). The inside edge of the collar is very faintly discolored, which will not be seen when the suit is worn. 2 more minor issues to note about this true vintage 1940s-50s suit: a tiny, pinhole-sized moth munch at the back of the skirt, and a partial munch at the right shoulder (see close-up photos). Although it is not by-any-means perfect, this lovely wool gabardine skirt suit is in good, totally wearable condition, in a great color!
