Description

This true vintage red and black buffalo plaid wool 1930s or 40s men’s shirt jacket features a diagonal front zipper opening, a spearpoint collar, and single zippered chest pocket. The shirt-jacket was originally designed as men’s work wear or winter sportswear, but I have it shown on my female mannequin because it is a relatively small size: a vintage men’s medium, or approximately a modern small. It has a straight, boxy fit, with the chest and hem width measuring the same. Buttons close the sleeve cuffs, and there are several snaps at the front hem, below the zip-front opening. The unlined, medium-weight twill-weave wool is a bright orange-red and black buffalo plaid (or tartan). In very good condition, the jacket has several modern repairs done by my excellent seamstress. These include black wool flannel patches (appliqued both on the insides and the outsides of the elbows) to stabilize the worn fabric there, turned under/shortened sleeve cuffs (also to stabilize wear at the previous cuffs edges), and one small mend by the original owner, near the front left hem (see photos). The sleeve buttons show a bit of wear to the dye/color from age and normal use. There are no other issues to note with this gorgeous piece of 1930s or early 1940s unisex outerwear. It has been freshly dry-cleaned and it is ready for many more years of wear!
