Description

This unusual early 1950s New Look style saucer or platter hat in navy blue fabric has a twist—or should I say a pinch? Each side of the wide wired brim is molded or pinched into a point, giving the hat an overall rounded diamond shape (see view of underside of hat). In front, the wide brim is a more typical downward-curved, rounded shape, coming to the aforementioned points on each side, and then narrowing to a smaller brim at the center back. The flat, shallow crown has a circular wired understructure, with flexible wired loops on each side, to help keep the hat in place on the head when worn. A knotted band in the same acetate and rayon blend fabric as the hat trims the crown. This unique 1950s saucer or platter style, wide-brimmed hat is in very good condition, with a bit of asymmetry to the wired brim from its long storage, but no other issues to note.

  • Brim width: 4 inches at center front and .75 inches at center back.
  • Crown height: approx. 1 inch (nearly flat).
  • Crown diameter: 5.5 inches from side to side and 6 inches from front to back.
  • Total diameter of hat, measured across crown and brim: 15 inches side to side and 11.5 inches front to back.
