Known for his costume design work at Columbia and Universal during the late 1940s and 1950s, Jean Louis (Berthault) also created clothing for film stars’ private wardrobes. The designer left film work and began his own design studio in 1960s, focused on cocktail and eveningwear. This lovely deadstock silk scarf likely dates to the late 1960s, not long after Jean Louis created “the infamous ‘Happy Birthday, Mr. President’ dress, worn by Marilyn Monroe in 1962 as she sang at JFK’s birthday party.” (Quote from the Vintage Fashion Guild’s ever-useful Label Resource.) The extra-long rectangular scarf features a bold stripe pattern in white, tomato red, and black. The scarf has hand-rolled edges, and is made of lightweight, fine silk with diagonal, twill-weave. It was in its original plastic packaging when I acquired it, but this was removed so I could photograph it. In excellent condition, the scarf was never worn. This versatile, very long 1960s designer vintage silk scarf can be tied a number of ways: at the neck, as shown, on your favorite bag, or folded and tied as a headband or headscarf.
