Description
This dome-shaped 1950s hat is made of stiffened, shiny black fabric with a texture like straw—just right for topping off your favorite spring and summer vintage! The curved, saucer shaped brim is widest at center front. The convex dome shape is indented slightly where the brim meets the nearly flat crown. A narrow band of satin piping trims the crown, and a braid of matching textured black fabric trims the brim just above the black velvet-covered wire stiffening its outer edge. Underneath, the hat is lined with black rayon jacquard taffeta. The velvet-covered wire circle inserted inside the crown is extended into 2 flexible loops to hug the sides of the head, and help keep the hat in place when worn. I think that the straw-like hat fabric is acetate or acetate and rayon blend, with a stiffening layer between it and the lining fabric, to help give the hat its rigid shape. There are a few small dents in the hat’s crown from storage that I was not able to remove with a steamer. I don’t think that they are likely to be noticed when the hat is worn, except on very close inspection. This simply chic and versatile 1950s black medium-brimmed hat is in very good condition. You could certainly add a flower or a brooch (or even a clip-on earring, clipped to the braid trim) to jazz it up a bit, if you like!
