Description
Classic Disney characters plus historic imagery of US soldiers during wartime makes for an interesting combination on this novelty print men’s 1970s polyester shirt! You might recognize the famous oil painting used as part of the print: The Spirit of ‘76 by American artist Archibald Willard was painted for display at the US centennial exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876. 100 years later, give or take, mid-1970s Americans (and American companies) were celebrating their nation’s bicentennial by slapping patriotic imagery on everything you could think of, including shirts like this one. Disney clearly jumped on this trend by licensing the manufacturer Kennington to produce a shirt with a version of the famous painting, casting the characters of Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy as the Revolutionary era patriots. The patchwork-style novelty print places the Disney characters and the Revolutionary War-themed painting alongside photo-print images of soldiers from the US Civil War, and what looks to me like the Spanish-American War. The colors in the print include soft blues and green, along with with the black and white of the historic photographic images. The shirt closes in front with pearly plastic buttons. It has a large, pointed collar and a curved, shirttail hem. The shape is slightly tapered in at the waist for a more fitted look. The polyester fabric is a lightweight, plain weave with a silky feel. This weird and wonderful 1970s Disney novelty print shirt is in excellent condition, with no issues to note. Labeled a vintage size medium, the shirt will fit more like a modern men’s small to women’s medium, with no stretch. See measurements below, for details about size.
