Description
This black straw late 1940s calot style hat resembles a small, close-fitting bonnet, with an asymmetrical, up-turned brim in front. All of the edges of the hat have wire to help keep its shape, hidden underneath the black rayon faille fabric trim. The left front of the hat has a diamond-shaped panel that dips down over the left ear, embellished with a pleated faille cockade and a dark gold metallic and red thread embroidered leaf appliqué. The lightweight black straw is woven in a crisscrossing pattern. The shallow, curved crown is designed to fit the back of the head, as shown. The asymmetrical style reminds me of a beret, when worn. This late 1940s, New Look era black straw hat is in excellent condition.
