Description
This extra-small but truly lovely, 1920s wide-brimmed cloche hat is made of sheer crin or horsehair in a warm sand color, with a rainbow of silk taffeta fabric color-blocked around the underside of its floppy brim. A narrow band of metallic gold braid trims the straight edges of the colorful silk, and pale gold thread has been used to topstitch concentric circles in the brim from crown to edge. The crin fabric sewn on top of the silk extends beyond it by .5 to 1 inch, creating the sheer, rounded brim edges. The deep crown of the cloche is lined with hand-sewn, sand-colored silk taffeta, and has a maker’s label “Fahnley”. The brim of the hat is turned under in back, which appears original to the piece. A twisted black satin ribbon band, threaded through a yellow-swirl celluloid and rhinestone pin or buckle on the right side, encircles the deep crown. This circa late 1920s fancy sun hat is perfect for pairing with a sheer chiffon garden party flapper dress or your very best 1920s-30s beach pajamas! It is quite small: the inner circumference of the hat’s crown measures only 20 inches around. It just barely fits on my size 21-inch head, so it is best for an extra small head size—or for display, of course. Remarkably for its age, this 100-year-old 1920s hat is in excellent condition, with no flaws to note.
